Amber Butchart’s The Fashion of Film is a handsomely produced look into the lasting legacy the art of film has had on modern fashion. Moving through genres from the silent era to the modern day, Butchart offers brief insights regarding the films with radical fashion that burst off the screen and onto the catwalk. For many of the films discussed, their look has had a more lasting impact than the films themselves, and Butchart nicely traces the cultural context of how movies like West Side Story, Batman, or Suspiria broke into the mainstream. As finely written and succinct as our author is with her summaries, the highlight of the book is the glossy stills she has curated from the movies and the clothes they inspired.
